The Throne

Laura Blair

Psalm 22:3  “Nevertheless, You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.”

Recently, we were singing a song based upon that verse.  The thought of Yahweh being “enthroned” on our praises intrigued me.  Someone told me that He has many thrones, so I went searching.

There are many verses about His throne.  “Your throne was established long ago; you have existed forever,” says Psalm 93:2.  Acts 7:49 is a word for word quote from Isaiah 66:1, “Heaven is my throne, says Yahweh, and the earth is my footstool.”  Verses in Matthew (5:34 and 23:22) and Psalm (11:4 and 103:19) say the same thing.  His throne will last forever is another common theme.  Hebrews 1: 8 quotes Psalm 45:6, “Your throne, O Elohim, will last forever and ever.”  (also Psalm 9:7 and Lamentations 5:19)  There is the element of judgment associated with the throne:  Psalm 9:4 and 97:2.

The book with the most to tell us about His throne is Revelation.  Almost entire chapters are devoted to describing for us what is happening, or what will happen, around the throne.  Read chapters 4 & 5, 7 & 8; angels are worshipping Him, the 24 elders are falling down in worship, the living creatures worship Him, as well as those invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. (chapter 19)  In chapter 8, verses 3 & 4, it says that “the prayers of all Yahweh’s people” are in front of the throne.  Incense is added to our prayers on an altar there.  These descriptions reminded me of the verse that started this study: Psalm 22:3.  He is enthroned on the praises of Israel.

I was struck by a prophecy I read in Jeremiah 3:16 & 17, “’And’, says Yahweh, ‘in those days, when your numbers have increased in the land, people will no longer talk about the ark for the covenant of Yahweh—they won’t think about it, they won’t miss it, and they won’t make another one.  When that time comes, they will call Jerusalem the throne of Yahweh.  All the nations will be gathered there to the name of Yahweh, to Jerusalem.  No longer will they live according to their stubbornly evil hearts.’”  I believe this is a promise for the future.  In Revelation, I found verses to confirm this.  In chapter 21, the author sees New Jerusalem in a vision.  There isn’t a Temple in the new city:  Yahweh is the Temple.  The author goes on in chapter 22, describing the new holy city.  In verse 3 he writes, “The throne of Yahweh and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship Him.”

Past, present, and future--Yahweh’s throne is the place of worship.  Let’s join with the angels and sing, giving Him a proper throne of praise.
