World Wide Flood Stories

By Rebekah Miller

I had to write a research paper on "World Wide Flood Stories" for a science class this past school year. These are some of the stories I found.

Tibet:

Tibet was almost covered with a flood. The god Gya took pity on the survivors, He drew off the water and He sent teachers to civilize the people, who had been like monkeys. Those people (who had been like monkeys) repopulated the earth.

Germany:

A louse and a flea had been making beer in an eggshell. The louse fell in the eggshell and burnt herself. It made the flea weep, which made the door creak, the broom sweep, cart run, ash-heap burn, tree shake itself, made a girl break her water pitcher, and the spring began to flow. And everything drowned from the spring’s water.

Kwaya (Lake Victoria):

The ocean was at one time in a small pot that a man and his wife owned. They used that pot to fill their other water pots when they got empty. The man told his daughter-in-law to never touch it. If she did all the water would escape and the sacred ancestors would escape. She touched it anyway and it broke into a lot of pieces. The result was that it flooded everywhere and everything drowned.

Lake Tyres (Victoria):

A giant frog drank up all the water so no one else could have anything to drink. Animals tried to make the frog laugh so the water would come out of him. No animal could make him laugh except an eel. The frog laughed and all the water came out of him resulting in a flood. All animals and men/women would have died if it wasn't for a pelican picking up

survivors in his canoe.

Pygmy:

A Chameleon heard something like running water, in a tree, but there was not water in the world at that time. He cut open the tree and the water came rushing out. The result was a great flood covering the whole world. The first humans of the world emerged out of the water.

Irish:

On Ireland which is led by one of Noah's granddaughters named Cessair, everyone was wiped out except for one person. Everyone else got wiped out by the flood after being on an island for forty days. After Partholon's and Nemed's people made it to the island another flood came and destroyed everyone except for thirty people. Those thirty people spread over the whole world.

Australia:

The Australian Aborigines believe that the flood was caused because children hurt birds and that this angered the gods. A storm appeared and covered everything except for a few really high mountain tops. A man tried to escape to a mountain with his canoe to survive the flood. Some other people survived with this man. The people who did not make it to the mountain died.

Lushai (Assam):

A king of the water demons fell in love with a lady named Ngai-ti (Loved One). She rejected him so she ran away. He surrounded the whole race of humans with water covering even Dhun-lu-buk. Threatened by the water the people threw Ngai-ti in the water which then receded. The receding water carved valleys; but up until then the land had been flat.
