Where we Belong

Jared Leys

I have heard it said that we do not belong here in this world.  I have heard it said that this is not our home, here on this earth.  So I find myself asking, where is home and where do we belong?

The ending chapters of the book of Revelation give us a picture of a place that is prepared for us to dwell with our creator, Yahweh.  He has built a beautiful home for us who may believe in him, and has promised it to us as long as we are faithful to him.  This is wonderful, this is great.  We have something to look forward to, and we know beyond doubt and beyond time that it will be there waiting for us.  But the question then becomes, what are we doing here if we do not belong here?

Solomon, one of the greatest kings of Judah, and probably the wisest man to ever live, tells us that everything is meaningless.  He tells us that wisdom is meaningless and that folly is meaningless.  Pleasures and work and advancement and riches are meaningless.  He explains how everything that comes to people here on this earth is without meaning.  That the work we do here yesterday, today and tomorrow, if we do it wisely, is worth just as much as the work of the fool.

Do not misunderstand and think that this means that Yahweh does not require righteousness from his people.  Instead, take this to mean that everything we do in this world is not for this world, but rather that it is for Yahweh.  That the reason we are here is to journey through this life in a way that brings us to the home that Yahweh has promised to give us.

So we can see that we are not born into a world where we belong, and that our search for home begins immediately.  And it can be seen that this search continues on throughout life as we know it here on this earth.  So I once again have to ask a further question.  How do we know the way to where we belong, to the home that is prepared for us?

The answer is simply found in Yahshua, our savior.  When he came to this earth and taught all of us with his acts and his words, one the most important lessons that he left us again and again is that he is the way to the Father, and that way can be hard; but if we follow as we should, as he wants us too, then it is simple, and the journey home is just a matter of time.

So in part, the question still remains, what are we doing here?  That is a question that could have a very lengthy answer, but a simple answer I have found is in the reading of Psalm 23.  That is one of the most famous sections of scripture, but perhaps that is because it is so meaningful.  I suggest reading it again, not only to youth, but also to any person who may ask the question of what they are doing here.  Read it this time as if every word it is explaining what you are doing here in the world.  Remember that Yahweh is always with you, and that he wants you to choose to always be with him.  Remember the promise he has given us of a home, and look to that in every moment.
